Why the middle is the wrong guess

Almost nothing worth watching is framed dead centre. Interviews sit the subject to one side of the frame deliberately. Two-handers put nobody in the middle. Any camera move, and a static crop ends up pointing at a wall while the person talks from off-screen.

This is why so many vertical re-cuts look careless. The footage was fine; the crop was a guess.

What automatic reframing does

It tracks the subject through the shot and moves the crop to follow them, so the person stays in frame when they lean, stand or walk.

The second half matters just as much: it detects scene changes and moves the crop at the cut rather than sliding across a take. A crop that drifts mid-shot reads as a camera nobody was operating properly, which is more distracting than a slightly off frame.

Keep the master, export the cut

Never reframe over the top of your only copy. The landscape original is the master; vertical is an export from it, the same way a compressed delivery file is. Platforms change their preferred aspect ratios more often than you will re-shoot.

Do the audio work on the master too, so every version carries the same cleaned-up sound rather than each export being processed separately.

Check the bottom of the frame before you publish

Short-form platforms put captions, buttons and a username over the lower part of the screen. A perfectly framed head that sits low in a vertical crop will have a comment count across the chin.

Watch the export on a phone, not on your editing monitor. It takes a minute and it catches the problem every time.
